More GAC competition success!

Club member Tony Fry entered last weekend’s British Target Championships at Lilleshall. Despite some challenging weather, he had a great time and came away with a winner’s medal (and a new club record!) Here is Tony’s report:

British Target Champs

It was the British Target championships this weekend at Lilleshall. The weather was typical, quite wet, very windy and the occasional bright spell. The two-day event was split into 3 competitions. For the barebow category this consisted of a WA50 (50m on a 122cm face) ranking round followed by a head to head. Day 2 was a 1440, which consists of 3 doz at 90m, 3 doz at 70m both on a 122cm face, followed by 3 doz at 50m and 3 doz at 30m both on a 80cm face. The first day didn’t go too well most archers were around 100 points short of where they thought they would be and I finished 8th.

In the head to head I managed to get to the quarterfinals but no further unfortunately. So day 1 finished with me ranked 6.

Day 2 was the 1440, the main reason for my entry. My goal was to achieve a MB score (858). I was off to a great start at 90m scoring 206, followed by a good 70m scoring 209. Unfortunately, my 50m was not so great and it took me a few ends to get my sight mark, so I ended the third distance with 166 and was in second place by 2 points. It was all to play for at 30m and I needed to score 277 to hit the MB target. It was close but I managed to hit the target score on my last arrow finishing with 280 and a final total score of 861. As a bonus I also won the round.

Despite being the only Guildford archer attending this victory put Guildford Archery Club in Joint third place.

The event was great fun, and it was really enjoyable to meet fellow archery from different regions, sharing a few jokes and taking a bit of stick.

Well done Tony!
