Knots in yew staves

I have acquired a stave of yew backed with rock maple, but it has large knots in it towards the ends. They cannot be got around because of their size and they are in the side of the stave. Is if safe to incorporate such large knots. I would post a photo but what a swine of a job trying to get one on the post. Any advice would be great.
