British Winter Open Day 2 Dylan Wins!
Report by Richard Meek
Day two of the British Winter Open saw a 99.6km task set with the first leg heading southwest along the mountains, then heading east into the valley, then north to the landing at Obando airfield.
At the 12:15 race start the majority of the field were positioned on the edge of the hills and the flats with just a few independent minded pilots trying their luck deeper in the mountains to the west or in the valley to the east. It took them 35 minutes to reach turn point 1 near Riofrio where conditions slowed as high cloud obscured the sun.
Weak climbs slowed things down and thinned the field as a number landed out. The high cloud remained, reducing the field further, as they crossed the valley east to turn point 2 in the foothills east of Andalusia/ Bugalagrande.
Then the sun returned, and with it the energy driving the thermals. Heading due north to the third turn point, pilots were treated to 3-4m/s allowing the pace to increase. And so it continued as they headed north on the final leg with a strong convergence line leading them to the end of speed (ESS) and on to the airstrip goal.
Dylan Mansley took the task win, having scooped the majority of the lead-out points and crossed the line 4 seconds behind Will Pardis. Violeta Jimenez won the task in the female category.
