Best Time Of Day To Skydive

0 5

Key Takeaways

The best time of day to go skydiving depends on who you are and what you prefer! There are pros and cons to skydiving in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Ultimately, predictable winds, blue skies, and nice temperatures are what you need to skydive. Can you skydive at night? Yes, once you get your B-License (50 jumps!), and after a short training. It’s a beautiful sight, especially on full-moon nights!

What Is The Best Time Of Day To Skydive?

What is the best time of day to skydive? The best time of day to jump out of an airplane is any time the weather is right! Do people have preferences? Absolutely. But, at the end of the day, a skydive is a skydive! Let’s break down the most common times to take the leap.

Morning Skydives

We love a piping hot cup of Joe just as much as the next guy, but nothing beats an early hour skydive. Morning skydives give the optimal burst of adrenaline to kickstart your day! Here’s a better look at the dos and don’ts of skydiving in the morning.

Morning Skydive Pros Morning Skydive Cons

Optimal Winds
The morning time generally has less intense or variable wind speeds. Why does this matter? We don’t jump when winds are too gusty, variable, or strong!

Early Start to the Day
Depending on who you are, this can be a pro or a con! Many people skydive on their days off work when sleeping in may be a priority.

Less Time for Anticipation or Anxiety
First jumps are nerve-wrecking! Checking it off your list first thing in the morning can help you feel accomplished early on. And who knows, if you love it, you can go back again later that day!

Adrenaline Crash Early in the Day
Skydiving is exciting! Our bodies surge with adrenaline during a first jump, which can lead to an adrenaline crash later. But fear not: we have a pool for you to lounge at for the rest of the day.

First Come, First Served
In the event of a weather delay, the jumpers scheduled earlier in the day will get to jump first once we start jumping again!
We always intend to get everyone in the air, but put safety first. Holding for weather is just part of the game!

Chillier Temperatures
It’s cooler in the morning! This can be a ‘pro’ in the warmer months, but mornings can be chilly in the cooler months. This is why we suggest wearing layers.
Pro tip: Although we do have seasons, California has awesome skydiving weather year round.

Early in the day, the dropzone is generally less busy. This means that morning time skydives have less hustle and bustle. If you find busy situations a bit overwhelming, a morning timeslot for your jump will be perfect. If people whooping and hollering with excitement around is your vibe, check out a midday skydive.

Midday Skydives

Is it better to skydive in the morning or the afternoon? Again, it depends! A lunchtime skydive is hard to beat with bright skies and great vibes at the dropzone. Are there any potential downsides? Let’s dig a bit deeper.

Midday Skydive Pros Midday Skydive Cons

Blue Skies
Morning can have some hazy clouds hanging around, which typically burn off by 11, leaving us with bright, blue skies!

Potentially Weird Winds
Weird winds can show up even when the skies look perfect. If we can’t predict the wind speed or direction, jumping can be a no-go. Winds like this are more common as temps rise throughout the day.

Hotter Temperatures
Cali is pretty even-keeled when it comes to temps, but it can still get quite warm midday. The freefall provides a breath of refreshing air (you lose about 40 degrees between the ground and exit altitude), but warmer temperatures can be uncomfortable on the ground.

If your skydive is scheduled for the afternoon and you’re wondering what to do the morning of skydiving, here are our top tips:

  • Take some deep breaths to calm any nervous jitters.
  • Eat breakfast as you normally would.
Breakfast is served at The Bombshelter every day until 11 am!
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Dress for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes.
Wondering: Should I skydive in shorts or pants? Tandem skydivers often slide in when landing, so pants are best regardless of the weather. We provide jumpsuits – let your instructor know if you’d prefer to wear one.
  • Get to the skydiving center on time.
Or earlier to check out the view, the vibes, the pool, and our specialty aircraft.
  • Do an indoor skydive!
    Check out the Adrenal-IN Experience.

Evening Skydives

Many experienced jumpers favor the last few loads of the day. There’s something special about closing out a great day of jumping as golden hour envelops you!

Evening Skydive Pros Evening Skydive Cons

The Coveted Sunset Jump
The setting sun glows, the city lights start to sparkle below, and the moon makes its nightly appearance. Sunset jumps give gorgeous views and special feels.

Rescheduling Conflicts
If there are heavy weather holds in the middle of the day, people jump in the order they are scheduled.

Cooler Temperatures
In the summer months, late afternoon jumps provide cool solace from the heat of the sun. They’re a perfect end to a long day!

Fatigue from the Day
All day anticipation can do a number on the nervous system and leave you feeling a bit knackered by the time your jump rolls around.

Lower Winds
Similar to the morning hours, evening generally comes with calmer winds! This makes the plane ride super smooth, too.

Cooler Temperatures
This is a pro and con! In the spring and fall months, early evenings can be chilly. If you’re sensitive to the cold, booking earlier in the day may be your best bet.

Can You Skydive At Night?

When should you not go skydiving as a first-timer? At night! After-dark jumping is common among experienced skydivers, but not tandem skydivers. (Trust us, a normal daytime skydive will come with enough excitement!)

Only skydivers who hold a B License or higher may choose to partake in night jumps. What does this mean? The B License is the second of four solo skydiving licenses – A, B, C and D – awarded by the United States Parachute Association (USPA).

Ready To Fly?

We like skydiving during all times of the day … it’s sort of our favorite thing ever! Whether you’re into early morning jumps, midday shreds, or golden hour freefalls, we can’t wait to skydive with you – book your jump today! Blue skies!!
