Gewächshaus

Ein echter Geheimtipp für ein paar ruhige Minuten auf der Bitterwasser Lodge ist das hauseigene Gewächshaus. Wenn man hineingeht kommt man in eine kleine eigene Welt. Früh morgens ist das Licht besonders schön. Alles strahlt und ist in warme Farben getaucht. Über ein System aus Stelzen und Seile spannt sich ein feingewebtes Netz. Irgendwie fühlt man sich darunter wie zuhause. Alles ist ruhig. Die Sonnenstrahlen legen sich mild auf die Haut. Auch die Geräusche wirken gedämpft. Ein paar kleine Vögel fliegen herum. Die Beregnungsanlage versprüht ein angenehmes kühles Klima.

Ich treffe Christian. Er arbeitet schon seit zwei Jahren in Vollzeit in Bitterwasser und fühlt sich pudelwohl. Er liebt seine Arbeit. Besonders die Möglichkeit auch mal zu experimentieren. Neues zu versuchen. Welche Pflanze wächst neben welcher am Besten. Wie kann man besonders ökologisch anbauen. Christian führt mich herum und freut sich mir alles erklären zu können. Unglaublich wie viele unterschiedliche Gemüsesorten und Pflanzen hier wachsen. Denn, wenn man sich die Fotos der vergangenen Tage ansieht fällt einem schnell auf, dass in der Kalahari grundsätzlich nicht so viel Gemüse wächst. Natürlich ist Wasser der Schlüssel zum Erfolg. Dafür hat Bitterwasser Brunnen angelegt und ist damit völlig autark. Was dann noch zu einer erfolgreichen Ernte fehlt ist eine gute Ausbildung und Erfahrung. Davon hat Christian einiges zu bieten. Er hat eine spezielle Landwirtschaftsschule besucht und weiß genau was er tut. Trotzdem erzählt er mir, dass er sich wirklich über einen Wissenstransfer aus anderen Ländern freuen würde: „Natürlich weiß ich einiges über Pflanzen, aber ich weiß auch dass die Erde nicht stillsteht und dass es viele neue Erkenntnisse gibt. Ich würde mich freuen, wenn jemand vorbeikommt und mir etwas Neues zeigt. Vielleicht hat jemand eine gute Idee etwas zu verbessern. Ich freue mich wenn ich etwas lernen kann.“ Also vielleicht kommt ja jemand aus der Branche und hat tolle Ideen. Immer her damit.

The Bitterwasser greenhouse is a real insiders’ tip if you like to relax a bit. When you go in you step into another small world. Especially early in the morning the light is magnificent. Everything gleams and is spotlighted by warm colors. You’re standing right under a construction of wood where-over you find a fine net. Somehow it feels like home standing there. Everything is calm. Sunlight feels good on your skin. All sounds are muted. Some little birds are flying around. The irrigation system creates a nice, comfortable cool climate. 

I meet Christian. He works full time in Bitterwasser for two years now and he likes it a lot. He loves his work. Especially the possibility to do some experiments and being creative. Trying new things. Which plant is best next to each other. How to cultivate the most economic way. Christian shows me around and is happy to explain everything to me. Unbelievable how many different fruits and vegetables are growing here. If you have a look at the photos from the last few days it is for sure not many fruits are growing in the Kalahari. It’s obvious water is key. Bitterwasser has build some wells and is therefore completely self-subsistent. Only thing left to a successful harvest is good education and experience. Christian’s got it all. He visited some special agricultural classes and knows exactly what he’s doing. Nevertheless he would be pleased to have kind of a knowledge transfer: „Of course I know a lot about plants. But I also know that the earth is turning and that there are new things. I would love if someone would come and tells me the latest stuff. Maybe someone has a good idea to improve anything. I am happy if I can learn something new.“ So maybe someone is an expert and has anything to tell. Come and talk to Christian.
